How This Shirt Changed My Life: My Shirt Story
Dear Little White Book,
My unique shirt story began in 2006, nearly 5 years ago. It all started out when I told my mom I had a relationship. That was the first time I actually had a girlfriend. Her name is Ariane. I met her in the office I currently work with for years.
It was a new chapter in my life. I had mixed feelings about all this... I was happy because I get to experience something new, and at the same time anxious on what to is next to come. I was looking forward to what might happen with my very first relationship.
One ordinary day, my mom gave me a new shirt. It was a brown Polo shirt with navy blue stripes at the collar and sleeves. Probably she gave this to me because she figured I only had a few shirts in my closet being kuripot (thrift) and all. Plus, most of my shirts are checkered polo shirts, which some of my friends say they look boring for a date. And so mom told me to use this new shirt from time-to-time whenever I go out with Ariane.
From the start, this Polo shirt for me was special.
I used this shirt the first time we went on a date to Manila Zoo. For starters, I wasn't sure if she will have a good time, or if she finds a trip to the zoo corny for her taste. Lucky for me, we had a good time together at the zoo all day!
I couldn't forget the moment when she tried to take a picture of me with the ostrich. As I posed behind the ostrich, I was unlucky enough to be pecked from behind. She laughed so hard at what happened, it made me laugh out too! Too bad the shot did not push through. Lol, maybe the ostrich just liked my shirt. What a memorable first date it was for me...
Many months went by, and as my love for Ariane flourished, so did the love for my shirt. I would wear this shirt in some of our evening dates, and on Saturdays, when we usually go out together. For me, it was a sign that things are headed for the better.
My relationship with Ariane also brought a lot of positive things in my life. During those memorable moments and life changes, my shirt was also there with me.
I wore my favorite shirt when I received recognition for perfect attendance from the company I work with. I received this on February 2007. Somehow my new relationship inspired me to do more and improve myself.
Aside from improving how I work, I revived my passion in joining contests. I was a contest enthusiast even before we met, and I just gave up due to lack of interest. Because of her, I was inspired to join contests once more. Every now and then, I join different kinds contests, some of them I actually won. To make me feel more confident, I also wear my lucky shirt. Here are some instances where I wore my shirt in some of the most memorable contests I joined.
I joined a popular eating contest and made my way to the finals! I was lucky enough to be featured in a photo and article on the Philippine STAR.
I joined an online blog and design contest the first time I opened this personal blog Journey of no FERA. In this contest I featured my lucky shirt that depicts my personality. The artwork I designed is featured below...
And with God's grace, my inspiration and my lucky shirt, I won the contest prize and got featured in a respectable Technology blog.
The assemblage art contest we joined in July 2008 was the most memorable for us. For Ariane and I, it was the most difficult and challenging to do because it took us a lot of effort and sleepless nights to come up with a competitive entry. Our entry was exhibited along with the other entries that made it before the deadline.
On the last day of the exhibit, wearing my lucky shirt, we waited for the result to be announced. We were both tense at the outcome because we really put in a lot of effort making our contest piece...And finally the winner was announced. Our entry was chosen to win the first prize! It was a very defining moment for us because all our hardwork and effort was rewarded. Wearing my favorite shirt, I represented the both of us in claiming the prize.
With all the memories of the adventures the two of us experienced, my shirt made me feel like a real winner, through and though, but there is more to the story I share to you, oh Little White Book. I realized that all the wonderful things that have happened wouldn't have been without Ariane, who has inspired me to make the most out of life. And without the gift my mother gave me one ordinary day, maybe our love story would have not turned out to be.Thanks to this wonderful gift: the shirt my mom gave to me, my life is headed in a new direction. After almost 5 years of being together, through ups and downs, trials and victories, I will finally be closing this chapter and opening a new one.
We will be getting married soon. It must have been fate that we met, and I am lucky that like my shirt, she stuck with me through thick or thin through the years. And also, I thank you mom for giving me this shirt which allowed me to be closer to the person most special to me.
I am looking forward to the next important chapter of my life. Even though I know married life will be filled with all new adventures and challenges, I will never forget the wonderful times I had with my lucky, special Polo shirt I often wore together with Ariane, the person I will cherish all my life.
Sincerely yours,
rdnofera, the Contest Pirate
P.S. Dear Little White Book, I know my letter to you is also a contest entry for My Shirt Story sponsored by Electrolux. If ever I win this contest, my shirt will be donated to those who need it more. Even though it pains me to part with this shirt because I love this shirt so much, and it has so much sentimental value, I am still willing to give it away. This favorite shirt was given to me, and it gave me a lot of blessings including contest prizes, awards and my soon-to-be wife. Hopefully if ever I donate this, may he or she receive this shirt with open arms along with many more blessings ahead.
I love this shirt! Now I want someone else to love it too! I support the Electrolux Wash-athon Clothes Donation Advocacy.

Being A Nuffnang Blogger is the Hottest Thing Since The Family Computer
When we were still kids the Family Computer (or Nintendo Entertainment System in the U.S. market) was the "in" thing in the world of video games. During those years (in the mid 80's to be more exact), as a kid, if your family does not own one of these cool gaming consoles, you would feel like you were left out in the medieval times.
I remember the day when my father bought one of these for our family enjoyment. We only had a handful of gaming cartridges to choose from but our excitement got the better of us on the first day. From that moment on it was like this gaming console has always been a part of the family.
We had our good times with the good ol' Family Computer. I remember I once played "Battle City" with my dad. I never knew it was so addictive that we started playing late evening, and by the time we finished it was already 6 a.m. the next morning! By the time my dad realized this, the only thing he could say to me was "Ok game over, time to sleep!" and left me to put away the Family Computer while he went off to bed.
There was even a time my brother and I got scolded by our dad because we played Super Mario 3 far too late in the evening while we had classes the next day. Thanks to my idea of not using the "warp zone", we played every level 'til our King Kuppa called us out (lol).
Having this console was so hot because it introduced us with a whole new dimension in gaming. Thanks to the Family Computer we got to experience different gaming styles and genres.
Some of my favorite games include:
Super Mario Bros 3 - this platform adventure games takes hours and hours to complete. With highly imaginative levels and entertaining gameplay, Mario has always been an inspiration to avid gamers worldwide.
Sports games like Nintendo Baseball and Tennis - these casual games allow you to practice timing while having fun with family and friends.
Gradius 2 and Salamander (a.k.a LifeForce) - these space adventure games take you dodging and shooting in captivating alien worlds.
Wild GunMan and Duck Hunt - these shooting games allow you to practice your targeting skills using the gun controller. Wild Gunman is a cartoony way of your Wild west shoot 'em up while Duck Hunt was specially funny and annoying at times whenever the dog laughs at you for missing the duck.
There are tons unforgettable games in the Family Computer, some even touted as legendary, their iterations and spinoffs have been ported to the newer gaming consoles like the Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii. To mention a few more aside from Mario, we have the Castlevania Series, Final Fantasy Series, Zelda Zeries and the Megaman (RockMan) Series. The legacy of these games is proof enough that the Family Computer was THE hottest thing in gaming during its time.
And while Family Computers were hot during the 80's, being a Nuffnanger is just as hot right now! What gives Nuffnangers its charm is similar to what gives the Family Computer its charm back then for the following reasons...
1) You never run out of variety. Just like choosing a video game you like to play, being a Nuffnanger allows you to participate in different activities inside and outside blogging. Worthwhile activities like special movie screenings and blogger events allow us Nuffnangers to redefine our limits in blogging.
2) You never run out of challenges. What I love about being a Nuffnanger is that they allow members to join in different blog contests sponsored by the Nuffnang advertisers. For me, contests are like video games only better! Contests allow us to hone our skill as bloggers and get a chance to win prizes too!
3) Being a Nuffnanger means you are part of the Family. With Nuffnang's bloggers events, you get a chance to meet and greet other active bloggers in person! Blogging is more than just writing, it's a way of socializing and getting to meet new friends. Just like our good ol' Family Computer we have considered a part of the family, being a Nuffnanger makes you a part of a bigger family in the great new world of online blogging.
* Visit the Nuffnang Philippines website to know more about Nuffnang. You don't need to spend in order to be part of a family. Membership is free of charge.
By the way, aside from Nuffnang being hot, Pizza Hut also delivers Pizza that is sure to be hot! Pizza Hut now offers Hot on the Dot Pizza deliveries: 30 minutes AND hot (as indicated by the thermally activated sticker you place on the pizza box upon receiving your pizza) or your pizza is FREE!
This is my entry to Nuffnang Philippines' Cowboys and Aliens Special Screening blog contest. First 100 bloggers to submit their blog posts get to win free invites to the movie: Cowboys and Aliens. Deadline for this contest is on August 8, 2011 11 a.m.
Also remember to dial 911-11-11 if you want your pizzas Hot on the Dot!

Captain America is My Idea of Nationalism
We all love superheroes. Lively characters wearing colorful costumes and battling it out with evil forces, these protagonists are the fancy of young and old alike. With highly imaginative battles they face in their very own comic book world, they are the stars that tell the common tale that good will always triumph over evil.
Captain America is no exception: a super solider with great strength, cunning and skill. But can we truly relate to this hero?
Clad with the red, white and blue, and the star at the center of his shield, Captain America clearly represents the American flag and its ideals. Americans can definitely relate to him and his heroic acts of honor and bravery.
But in the Filipino context, who or what is Captain America to us? Probably for some, he is just one in a long line of estranged superheroes. We can probably relate more to our own set of superheroes like Captain Barbell, Darna or Panday.
Yet, with all the popularity our Pinoy superheroes have at the local scene, we don't have a superhero counterpart that bears our country's flag.
Our flag is the ultimate symbol of what it means to be Filipino. It is a sign of our hopes and dreams, and our identity as a nation. Our own red white and blue sun-and-stars flag has its own rich and colorful history that we can truly be proud of.
Captain America bears his National Pride. Many of us claim to have it. Yet we are not fully aware of the gravity of its meaning. For some, cheering for our fellow Pinoys who are successful in life is enough to show national pride. But in truth this is not enough.
To bear National Pride takes more. To do that we have to be heroes in our own right. And to be a hero, it takes a lot of heart.
In the simplest of ways, we can show our version of Pinoy heroism. It takes heart to do the right thing, like paying your taxes correctly and on time. It takes heart to give your life for the sake of others, like helping fellow Pinoys in dire need. It takes heart to be brave and stand up for what is right, like avoiding bribery and turning away from criminality and corruption. This is what I believe being Captain America is all about. A hero is one who has desire to serve his nation and fellowmen. As bearers of our own flag, we should do the same.
On a final note, every Filipino is called to be a hero and make our country change for the better. Why is it we only dream of having a country free of corruption and with great economic stature if we only continue to dream and do nothing? It's time we start to bear our flag and take action to make our nation's dream a reality.
Just like Captain America, we are not only asked to raise our flag up high. We are all called to "wear" it as well.
Captain America, The First Avenger will be showing in theaters on July 27, 2011 nationwide.

From OH NO! to OTTO Waterless Urinals
This is a true story I would like to share. Just a couple of nights ago, something 'irregular' happened. Just before bedtime, I went to the bathroom to do my regular toilet routine. I already brushed my teeth earlier, so it was time for me to urinate one last time. Only after pressing the flush button did I find out something was amiss.
OH NOOOOO!!! NO FLUSH! Our water tank went empty.
I never expected that we would run out of water in the middle of the night. I wondered 'what the hell happened?'. Our helper always made sure the tank is filled at the end of the day. I'm also pretty sure we were prompt on paying the monthly water bill. And since it's already the rainy season, water shortage is less likely to happen.
this is a simple skit I made based on my previous waterless experience...
The following morning, I found out the reason behind it. Our water connection was cut off because our neighbor 'fixed' his water problem. The plumber he hired accidentally severed our connection from the main pipe while doing his job fixing theirs.
If only we had ways to conserve more water that time. If we did, we would have enough water to last the next day. Then, I would not have to report to office without taking a bath. (lol)
Water conservation is essential to man's survival. There is no telling when we will actually run out of clean water to use. Just take my case for example.
On a larger scale, population growth in our country is on a steady rise. And while our demand for clean water increases, our supply steadily decreases. The big bad news unfortunately is that, even if strong rains bring in lots of water to our dams, our water treatment facilities that process clean water will gradually become insufficient to handle the population's growing need.
a photo I took of residents in Antipolo City, who have to go down to the mountainside to fetch water for sanitation and other personal use.
On a different perspective, while major cities in the country have ample supply of clean water, some of the rural parts of the Philippines are underdeveloped in terms of sanitation. According to statistics from the Water Supply & Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC), around 30% of rural areas in the Philippines are still without improved sanitation facilities.
This is why we should do our part in conserving our most precious resource while promoting efficient methods of hygiene throughout the country starting with our very own bathroom. The bathroom will always be the part of our home that uses the most water - for bathing, oral hygiene and urination.
And among bathroom activities, flushing after urinating consumes the most water, perhaps around several gallons per day. Think about it. It only takes me one pail of water to take a bath each day, but each time I urinate, an amount roughly equal to a pail of water is needed to flush. An average person urinates several times a day, which translates to A LOT of clean water excessively used.
But thanks to modern bath interior developments like the OTTO waterless urinal, it is already possible to reduce excessive flushing.
What if I had an OTTO waterless urinal in my home? If I did, maybe I wouldn't have experienced my latest water inconvenience (lol). There are many advantages of having my very own OTTO waterless urinal, such as being...
P - practical - The OTTO waterless urinal allows you to maximize your savings and minimize waste of time and resources.
a) save money on water costs - Since this urinal is water saving, you get to save gallons and gallons worth of clean water.
b) easy to clean and maintain - the OTTO waterless urinal is easy to clean because of its simplicity and easily understood by the average bathroom user. It even comes with an instructional manual that is easy to follow.
c) less susceptible to mechanical failure - traditional urinals and toilets have flush valves, levers and chains that break, or rubber stoppers that wear down. When the time comes, you may have to replace them. With all the confusing gimmickry, the average person might have difficulty fixing it. Why pay for a plumber to fix something that breaks down so often? The OTTO waterless urinal has less moving parts and exposes it less to wear.
d) use re-usable cartridges - what makes OTTO waterless urinals different from other waterless urinals is that, their cartridges can be reused. Cartridges filter the urine taking away the bad odor. The downside of using them is that it has to be replaced overtime. However, OTTO waterfree urinals' cartridges can be washed and reused, allowing us to save even more!!!
E - ergonomic - With much attention to design, the OTTO waterless urinals are space savers, elegant and simple to use. Plus it's easy to install too!
E - earth-friendly - The OTTO waterless urinal allows us to preserve our precious water for more important uses, like agriculture and drinking water. Also, the biodegradable blocking fluid inside the cartridge can easily be disposed of because it is non-toxic and will decompose overtime when discarded.
Thanks to the OTTOlock designed by Filipino inventor Mr. Jerry Ong, the OTTO Waterless urinal is the most efficient waterless urinal to date. His design allows us to enjoy all these benefits because of the the OTTO Waterless urinal's reusable cartridges.
The OTTO Waterless Urinal. It's practical, ergonomic and earth-friendly: a helpful device for the average Filipino who needs to maximize his spending, minimize on waste, and save the most important resource on the planet - water.
