Globe Codespark Competition


Globe Telecommunications has launched a software developing competition - The Codespark Competition. With the theme ,"Innovating for the Connected Filipino," application entries should connect to the Internet either via GPRS/3G to deliver its core functionality. The objective of this contest is to provide incentives for developers to build new and innovative applications targeted at the Philippine market.



There are two categories for this contest, and for each category, a prize of 25,000 pesos cash is at stake. This contest is open to all Filipino developers who have registered at the Globe labs website.

Contest Mechanics and Guidelines:

All participating teams to Globe Labs CodeSpark Program 2010 (“Program”) will design and develop applications (“Application”) in accordance to the Rules and Regulations set forth by Globe Telecom, Inc. (“Organizer”). By participating in this Program, the Participant or Participants is/are presumed to have read and accepted the following Rules and Regulations. Non-compliance with any of the following Rules and Regulations shall be a ground for disqualification / removal from the Program.

Note: The Organizer has the sole discretion to change the above dates or cancel any of the above activities. Announcements shall be made through email and shall be posted in the Globe Labs Portal (www.globelabs.com.ph).

Participants’ Eligibility

1. The Program is open to all members of the Globe Labs Developer Community. Membership to the Globe Labs Developer Community only requires registration. To register as member, Participants must fill-up and submit the on-line registration form found in the Globe Labs portal (www.globelabs.com.ph).

2. Employees of Globe Telecom, Inc., Nokia Corp. and their subsidiaries, and their immediate family members, are not eligible to participate in the Program.

3. If a Participant is below 18 years old, s/he must submit a written consent form signed by his parents or legal guardian. The Written Parental Consent must be tendered along with the Application submission.

4. If the Participant is representing a company, institution, or a group, they must submit a certification from the company, institution, or group that they are the authorized representative of said company, institution, or group. Companies, institutions or groups may enter multiple entries through multiple Participants.

5. Participants can also be composed of Teams. Each Participating Team can have maximum of five (5) members. Each Team must designate a Team Leader to officially represent the team in communications and other transactions. An individual may be a member of multiple teams.

6. All Participants must remain eligible throughout the Program. Should a Participant or Team member become ineligible at any time during the Program, S/he cannot be replaced or substituted throughout the Program, regardless of the cause. Participants may lose their eligibility if at anytime during the Program s/he either ---

(a) becomes an employee of Globe Telecom, Inc., Nokia Corp. and their subsidiaries,
(b) discovers that s/he is an immediate family member of any employee of Globe Telecom, Inc., Nokia Corp. and their subsidiaries, or
(c) ceases to be an employee of the company s/he represents, a student or faculty or staff of the educational institution s/he represents or be part of the group s/he represents.

7. In the case of a team leader becoming ineligible, he should inform Globe Labs by sending an email to globelabs@globetel.com.ph of his ineligibility. The remaining members of the Participating Team must designate a new team leader among the Participating Team’s remaining registered team members.

Registration
1. Participants must register for the Program on or before August 20, 2010. Participants must provide a completed and official registration form and comply with all other registration requirements to be considered registered. The registration form can be accessed / downloaded from the Globe Labs portal (www.globelabs.com.ph).

2. Upon registration, Participants must provide information about the application they wish to enter. This information includes:

1. The name of the Application,
2. A short description of the Application, and
3. The Category of the Application (as defined below).

3. Along with the registration form, Participants must submit the following:

1. A photocopy of a valid government, school or company ID for each Participant,
2. A signed copy of the CodeSpark 2010 Rules and Regulations, and
3. Written Parental Consent of any member who is below 18 years old.
4. Participants can submit the registration form along with the other requirements electronically either through email or via the Globe Labs Portal either as scanned images or electronic documents. Alternatively, Participants can submit their registration forms via courier or regular mail to:

5. Failure to comply with any of the Registration requirements and procedures will render a Participant ineligible for the Program.
Application Categories
1. There are two (2) Program Categories. Each Category has requirements and mandatory features that must be present within the submitted Application.

a. Applications Developed for the Series 40 Platform
· The Application must run on Nokia devices supporting the following device profiles – Series 40 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, Series 40 5th Edition, Series 40 5th Edition Lite and Series 40 6th Edition.
· The Application must run natively on the device and be written in Java ME (CLCD 1.0, MIDP 2.0, optional JSRs must be present in the aforementioned device profiles)

b. Applications Developed for the Series 60 Platform
· The Application must run on Nokia devices supporting the following – S60 3rd Edition FP1, S60 3rd Edition FP1, S60 5th Edition. Developers can use the following to build their applications

1. Flash Lite
2. Web Runtime (WRT) with Platform services v. 1.0
3. Symbian C++ / Qt

· The Application must be accessible directly from the device and should not be loaded through a mobile browser.

2. Participants can develop more than one (1) application for the chosen category and implement the mandatory features under each category. Participants can also submit multiple but different applications in one (1) category.

3. The Organizer reserves the right to cancel a Category if there is only one Participant registered under that category. The Participant shall be notified by the Organizer and shall be allowed to choose a Category from the remaining categories. The affected Participant shall be given a period of one week to submit a new proposal for an alternative Category.

4. The Organizer reserves the right to change or redefine a Category with due notice to the Participating Teams.
Mandatory Application Features and Requirements

1. Applications must connect to the Internet via GPRS, 3G or WIFI to deliver all or part of its core functionality.

2. Participants must comply with any Licensing Agreements associated with SDKs, libraries, toolkits used in creating the Application.

3. Applications must run on Globe identified test phones. These phone models will be announced on or before August 20, 2010 and shall be made available to Participants for testing. Test phones shall be reserved in 3-hour blocks and reservations must be made at least 2 working days in advance. Test phones shall only be accessed within the Organizer’s premises and under the supervision of the employees or staff of the Organizer.

5. Applications with a server-based component that needs to send or receive SMS/MMS must use the Globe Labs SMS/MMS API. Participating Teams must strictly comply with the rules governing the use of the Globe Labs SMS/MMS API. Peer-to-peer based SMS/MMS transactions need not use the Globe Labs API.

6. The language for user interface shall be in English or Filipino.

7. The Application must: (a) be an original work of the Participant, (b) not been previously commercialized or sold, (c) not an entry into any other competition or contest during this Program, (d) comply with applicable laws, regulatory requirements, or other governmental regulations, (e) not infringe or violate any proprietary or intellectual property rights of any person or company, (f) not contain any material (i.e. music, video clips, images or any other copyrighted material) that is abusive, threatening, obscene, profane or otherwise offensive or in violation of any applicable laws or government regulations, (g) not contain software viruses or any other computer code, files or programs designed to interrupt, destroy or limit the functionality of any computer software or hardware or telecommunications equipment, (h) not be able to generate any unsolicited or unauthorized advertising, promotional materials, "junk mail," "spam," "chain letters," "pyramid schemes," or any other form of solicitation, (i) not contain any functionality of a spy ware or spamming tools, and (j) not collect or store personal data about users of the Application in connection with the prohibited conduct and activities set forth above.

8. Applications previously developed for other non-Nokia devices (Blackbery, iPhone, Android, etc.) that are intended to be ported to Nokia platforms are allowable, subject to the conditions outlined herein.

9. Applications are allowed to connect to third party, open and freely available Internet based APIs to deliver some or all of its functionality subject to the terms and conditions of said APIs.

10. In the event that any part of the Application contains proprietary or intellectual property rights of third persons, the Participant shall submit the necessary documents showing that they have procured the necessary agreements, consents, and licenses from third parties for the use of any material owned by said parties.

11. Participants shall ensure that the Application shall not constitute any privileged or secret information, and the Organizer is not under the obligation to protect any information whether confidential or otherwise which is received in connection with the Program.

12. Participants cannot submit the same Application more than once. Applications that differ in aesthetic features and content but have the same functionalities are considered similar. Participants with entries found to be similar shall be asked to prove otherwise. The Organizer reserves the right to disqualify Applications under dispute.

13. Applications must be packaged in the appropriate installation medium upon submission. JAR files for J2ME applications, SIS files for Symbian C++ / QT applications and others formats as appropriate. Applications should be considered ready for installation. Applications must be installable via Bluetooth, USB transfer and via the Internet through WAP/HTTP.

14. Application entries found to be in violation of these Rules and Regulations shall be considered non eligible.

Submission of Entries
1. All Participants must submit their entry by uploading the necessary files through the Globe Labs Portal (www.globelabs.com.ph) on or before 5 p.m. PHT of September 3, 2010.

2. Entries must be submitted together with the following:

1. Technical Description of the Application (the format of which will be provided by Globe Labs)

2. An Icon/Logo for the Application

Size: Size (pixels) Min 256x256, Max 2000x2000. 10 Bytes- 2MB. Square. Format: JPG, PNG
This icon / product logo is shown when the end-user navigates through the store via the Ovi Store.

3. Screen Shots
Size: Size (pixels) Min 256x256, Max 2000x2000. 10 Bytes- 2MB. Square. Format: JPG, PNG
The screen shot should depict the user experience of your game or application. Participants must submit at least one (1) screen shot and can submit up to three (3) screen shots.

4. All files for submission must be compressed into one zip file.

5. Participants may opt to submit their entries before the deadline for submission to check for completeness and/or fulfillment of mandatory Application requirements. Participants shall be informed of any deficiencies and allowed to correct these deficiencies five (5) workings days prior to the deadline of submission. Any entry found to be incomplete or deficient after the deadline for submission shall not be eligible for awarding.

Publication to the Ovi Store and myGlobe Free Apps

1. By participating in this Program, Participants agree that their applications will be published in the Philippine Ovi Store and myGlobe Free Apps for a period of four (4) months and shall be made available for free to end-users ,subject to the terms and conditions of the Philippine Ovi Store and myGlobe Free Apps.

2. Applications shall be made public on the Philippines Ovi Store on September 8, 2010 and subsequently on myGlobe Free Apps.

3. Prior to publication, all Applications must be digitally signed. Participants have the option of using their own signing certificate obtained through signing authorities such as Verisign or JavaVerified and signing an Application through this certificate. Alternatively, Participants may sign their Applications through Globe Labs.

4. Applications must pass through the Philippine Ovi Store Quality Assurance process prior to publication. Applications that do not pass this process shall not be eligible for awarding.

5. Applications published in the Philippines Ovi Store and myGlobe Free Apps shall remain the Intellectual Property of the Participants.

Judging
1. The Application will be evaluated by Organizers based on the following criteria:

Innovation / Originality 30%


Ease of Use / Simplicity / Usability refers to the intuitive and easy to use characteristics of the application and the creative design of the user interface for the target audience.

Relevance / Potential user base / Repeat Usage refers to the attractiveness of the application to target users which may be manifested in several ways, e.g., its potential to become viral, to encourage prolonged or repeat usage, to reduce cost or improve quality of existing services.

Quality / Visual Appeal refers to the quality of the aesthetic elements in an application, its graphics, images, fonts

Innovation / Originality refers to the uniqueness of the application with respect to what is available in the market, e.g., uniqueness in the application's functionality, implementation, usage model, or user interface.

2. The Organizer shall organize an event for Judging prior to September 24, 2010, where each Participant shall be given the chance to present their entries.

3. At least one, Participant must be physically present to demonstrate their functional Application during the Judging.

4. Unless previously submitted during the registration process, Participants must provide physical copies of the following;

1. A photocopy of a valid government, school or company ID for each Participant,
2. A signed copy of the CodeSpark 2010 Rules and Regulations and,
3. Written Parental Consent of any member who is below 18 years old.

5. Participating Teams must also bring signed copies of the following documents to the Judging:
a. Certification of IP Ownership, and/or
b. Certification of 3rd Party-Owned IP, if applicable, and/or
c. Certification of Authorization from company, institution, or group represented, if applicable.

6. Each Participant shall be given a total of fifteen (15) minutes to demonstrate the usage of their Application to the Judges. The Organizer shall have the right to extend the time allotted for the use and evaluation of the Applications.

7. After evaluation of all Applications in a Category, the judges shall determine the two (2) winners for each Category. An Applications needs to receive a minimum score of 65% to be considered eligible for awarding.

8. The Judges’ decision shall be final and binding in all matters relating to the Program.

9. In the event of a tie preventing the selection of only two winners per category, the Judges shall deliberate and break the tie.Bold

Awarding
1. The Awarding Ceremony shall be held on September 24, 2010.
2. There shall be two winning entries per Category. Each winning entry / application shall receive Php 25,000 and a brand new S60 Nokia Handset.
3. Prizes are transferable only with the consent of the Organizer.
2. The winners shall be responsible for payment of the necessary prize tax.
3. The Organizer is not responsible for any dispute arising from the distribution of the prize among the members of the winning team.
4. Any unclaimed prizes within sixty (60) days from the Awarding Ceremony shall be forfeited in favor of the Organizer.
Additional Rules
1. By participating in this Program, all Participants agree that within the duration of the Program and six (6) months from the Awarding Ceremony, to grant the Organizer the right of first refusal to enter into a commercial agreement for the use, license, or distribution of the Application mutually agreed upon by the Organizer and the Participant.

2. All Participants, without need for additional compensation from the Organizer, agree to the following:
a) to participate in any promotional events and activities that may include, but are not limited to, showcases of the winning Application at industry events, and
b) to allow the Organizer to use the Application entry for market research, demonstration, or promotional purposes.

3. All Participants hereby agree to release, indemnify, defend and hold the Organizer, its employees, consultants and assignees, from any and all claims, liabilities, losses or damages (including without any limitation attorney’s fees) related to their participation to the Program. Further, under no circumstance shall the Organizer, its employees, consultants and assignees be liable to any Participant for any direct, indirect, or consequential damages arising from or in connection with the Program, whether resulting from tort, contract, statute, law or otherwise, including but not limited to liability for lost, damaged, misdirected, delayed Application entries.

4. The Organizer accepts no liability for any technical difficulties affecting the result of the Program, the entry or delivering the Application to the Program. All Participants agree that they are solely responsible to ensure the security and integrity of the Application entry.

5. The Organizer retains all rights and control over the Program.

6. The Organizer retains the right to cancel the Program for any reason and without cause.

7. All Participants shall shoulder all costs, expenses, fees, travel expenses, duties and taxes associated with a Participant’s involvement in the Program.

8. By submitting any entries, the Participant agrees to abide by and be bound by these Rules and Regulations and the decision of the Organizer, which shall be final with respect to all issues relating to this Program. It is the Participant’s responsibility to ensure that s/he has complied with all of the Rules and Regulations.

9. The Organizer reserves the right to amend any of the Rules and Regulations with due notice to all Participants.

10. These Rules and Regulations are governed by and shall be construed in accordance with the laws of the Philippines, and the Participants submit him/herself to the jurisdiction of Philippine courts.



Personal Note: Due to the technical aspect of this contest, this may not be for everyone. But if you think you are capable of submitting, this may be an opportunity to show off your application developing skills to possible future software companies you want to apply for.
