Eveready has always been a part of me as far back as I can remember. During my gowing-up years and up to today, these Ever-reliable batteries were constantly there for me.
They were there in my favorite battery-operated firetruck toy when I was 3 years old. At that time, 'Eveready' was one of those few brand names I learned to read because I relied on it to make my firetruck run. I even asked my mother to have more Eveready in store so that the fun never ends.
And as I grew older and went to school, Eveready was still there for me. It as on my alarm clock that woke me up for school in the morning, and in my small night lamp I used before I went to sleep. Eveready was on my tape recorder, so I could voice record some of my lectures. It was also there on my calculator - the tool I depended on the most to get through my schooling years. Eveready also made my grade for my science projects! I remember I used an Eveready to make an electromagnet, a simple electric circuit, and even an LED (light emitting diode) display! With Eveready, my school days were complete.
And as I work today, Eveready is still here with me. I still use my trusty Eveready-powered calculator to compute, check and verify the accuracy of my work. I also use Eveready on my flashlight I keep in my office desk drawer in case of brownouts.
There were two incidents in my life Eveready saved me and my family. The first was when typhoon Sisang visited Metro Manila. I was all ready for school back then when strong rains hit us one morning. There was brownout that time so, my parents were listening to the radio for weather updates powered by C sized Eveready batteries. Aside from classes being suspended, we found out that the typhoon was getting worse by the hour.
When they found out about the massive flooding happening around the Metro Manila area, my dad checked the creek behind the backyard of our house. To his surprise, the creek water level has risen beyond normal, and touched the wall of our backyard. Because of this my parents decided to evacuate the house immediately, taking some of our clothes and appliances with us to our nearby relatives.
When we came back to our house after typhoon Sisang left a few days after, we found out that the wall of our house crumbled because of the flood waters. The interior of our house was not spared by the floods. Everything we left behind got soaked - appliances, clothes, furniture and all. Some of our stuff had gone missing, probably washed away by the creek. If we didn't evacuate earlier, it could have been worse.
The other incident was when typhoon Ondoy hit Metro Manila last year. I was in my office then when Ondoy was at its worst. It was already raining hard around 10 a.m. in the morning. The strong rains were no cause for concern, that was until I found out that the rains continued on until late afternoon. I found out from newscasts that flooding and brownouts were already widespread in Metro Manila.
When it was time to go home, I went straight to the transport terminal. Unfortunately, no rides were available - not even a single FX van, jeep or bus. Probably they got stranded on the road due to the floods. I had no choice but to walk home.
The distance from the office to my home is 12 kilometers apart. I started my trek around 5:30 p.m. After 30 minutes of walking, the roads and surroundings were already very dim. I already prepared my flashlight because I knew I won't make it home before nightfall.
Flood waters still covered the roads that lead to my house. I knew the danger of traveling through the flood specially at night, with open manholes and all, but still I took my chances. As I traveled, I met people along the way who shared a similar fate - forced to wade on uncertain terrain just to get home. We traveled in groups because we knew it was safer that way. And with the light on my Eveready-powered flashlight, at least we could visibly see familiar landmarks, the flood waters, and the elevated areas where we can pass. After two whole hours of travel and wading through the floods of Ondoy, I finally made it home.
In ordinary, everyday moments and in times of emergency, I can truly say, Eveready has been and will always be a part of my daily life. Ever ready, always there. That's what Eveready stands for.
This is my entry to the Everyday Eveready moments contest. Deadline is today, December 31, 2010. To know more about this contest, check out the Nuffnang PH Everyday Eveready moments contest post.

My Christmas Wish This Year: A Nokia C7
I wish someone would give me a new high-tech phone this Christmas, namely, a Nokia C7. I will admit though, I do have enough money to spend for it even if the title of my blog is Journey of No FERA. Rather, with my "No FERA" ways, winning a phone is a lot more fun and exciting than buying them over-the-counter.
* No FERA = No pera (no money). My motto, "Why spend on something when you can win it!"
Why do I want a new phone?
I have been using my Nokia 1200 for quite some time now, around two years I think. For those who don't know what a Nokia 1200 is, here is what mine looks like...
I bought myself a Nokia 1200 2 years ago because it's very cheap, sturdy (like all Nokia phones) and very practical. I use this mainly to sell cellphone load, earn extra income, and text friends (if it is important). Some of my office mates mocked me for owning one of these because of its 'caveman' features. Its monochrome display, and an LED flashlight quite describes my unique personality - frugal and Scrooge-like.
And so I want to change that stingy perception others see in me. Maybe with a high-tech phone like the Nokia C7, people around me will start saying 'COOL! you're with the IN-crowd now!' or 'WOW, you bought something new for yourself...'
What makes the C7 worth having?
The Nokia C7 is one of the newest and coolest phones around. It is armed with a lot of nifty features like its touchscreen controls, wireless LAN so that you can use free internet when you're at a free wifi zone, and a built-in camera and FM radio for added versatility. The Nokia C7 can even serve as a data modem in case you need internet connection on your laptop. Just connect it to your lappie and it's good to go!
What can I do with it?
A lot of fun stuff have crossed my mind if ever I get to own a Nokia C7. Here are some on my list...
1) I can use it as an alternate camera - I really enjoy taking great pictures with my current point-and-shoot camera. But during those times I left my camera at home, I wished my phone had a decent camera. With the Nokia C7's 8MP camera and dual flash, I might as well leave my point-and-shoot at home for good.
2) I can take good videos - Right now, I am still experimenting on video effects using video editing software but I don't have a video camera!!! If ever I made a video before, it's either because I borrowed a camera or it was shot straight from my laptop. My current still digicam has microphone problems, so I don't use it for video.
The Nokia C7 is great for filming because it takes video at 720p, at 25 frames per second and has video stabilization.
3) I can listen to YES FM! Just kidding... but having a radio is very practical if you're tired listening to your overused playlist.
4) I can digitally draw with it. Because the Nokia C7 has a touch screen pad, I can use a stylus pen which allows me to draw images directly rather than using the pen tool in Photoshop to plot and draw (which by the way takes a lot more time to complete).
5) I can join more online contests! With the internet and WiFi connectivity of this phone, I can even join contests while I am on the go! What a lovely thought...
Poor me, not much equipment to compete properly in the contest arena, and hopefully with the Nokia C7, things might change for the better.
...but do I deserve it?
How I wish I could own this piece of modern technology. It will really help me a lot in my quest to win more free stuff. But then again, I have already managed to win some contests using my current camera and equipment. The Nokia C7 will help me a lot, yes. But I believe someone else needs it more.
I wish to win the Nokia C7 phone for my mother.
She deserves the phone more than I do. Currently she uses an antiquated Nokia 3650 for 5 years and never bought a new phone ever since. Problem is, she now has some difficulty pressing those small keys because of her deteriorating eyesight. So I figured, it would be better if she used the Nokia C7 instead of me. The phone's touch screen display is bigger and brighter so she will be able to see the keys better. Plus, the Nokia C7 is thin and lightweight unlike her current phone, which makes handling easier for her.
She has always been supportive to me for all these years, and I wish to repay her by winning this phone. It's because of her personal touch and is easy to connect with, I learned a lot from her ways, like being resourceful and kuripot. She taught me to make do with whatever I have, and to think of alternate ways to achieve my goals.
Without all the fancy stuff, I was able to win in photo contests without using a DSLR, video contests without a camcorder, and digital art contests without a tablet. I even managed to win in online contests even without much internet access. All these I achieved thanks to her life-winning lessons.
Hopefully, Nuffnang Philippines can grant my Nokia C7 Christmas wish for her.
Thanks and Merry Christmas to all!

A Bugged Life - Holiday Gadget Swarm Week 3
Technology blog A Bugged Life with Samsung Philippines as sponsor is giving away a SHARK SERIES SF410 gaming notebook for their week 3 contest. All you have to do to join is creatively make an acronym out of the word SAMSUNG.
This contest is open to readers of A Bugged Life.
Mechanics from the contest page...
1. You can submit entries from now till 11:59 PM of December 11. I usually announce the winner by the evening of the next day, the 12th.
2. Since Samsung has been around since the time we were kids (and even before!), I’m reminded of a fun game we used to play. Remember how we’d turn names of countries into acronyms and use it to spell out words? For example, take the country of ITALY:
I
Trust
And
Love
You
Now it’s your turn. Let’s see how much fun we can have with Samsung! Remember, I’ll be asking help from someone from their team (with me having the final say) so please, nothing vulgar. Have fun! Be creative! Make us laugh!

M
S
U
N
G
3. Entries can be in English / Filipino / Taglish. Just like before, you can submit as many entries as you want in the comments but make sure you leave a valid email address.
Personal Notes:
- since making an acronym is fairly easy, a lot of readers already submitted theirs. You can post as many as you like but it takes a lot of creativity and humor to make your entry stand out.
- Deadline of this contest is 11:59 pm of December 11, 2010.

- unfortunately, there can only be one winner for this contest just like the previous NSFY contest. There were finalists mentioned last time, but I don't think they received anything - just a special mention.

- deadline is on December 19 2010.
For more information about this contest, just head over to the Nestle Fruit Selection Yogurt Facebook page.
